Each tool carries diamonds on its cutting edge: segments on a blade, beads on a wire, a crown on a core bit. Guidance is what holds the line through the full thickness: the wall saw head runs on its rail, the floor saw tracks a chalked line, and the core rig is anchored so it cannot drift. Corners are where rough work shows, so they are cored or finished to the mark rather than overcut past it. Depth changes the equipment: a shallow cut in a yard is quick work for a floor saw, while a thick base can need a bigger blade, several passes or a wire saw. Metres of cut are only part of the time on site: setting up the saw, bringing in water, protecting the area and taking away the cut pieces all count whatever the length. Several openings or trenches in one building cost less priced as one job than booked one at a time. A cut beside a live road, down in a basement or on an upper floor takes longer to set up than one in an open yard.

For a single paving slab or a kerb, a hand-held cut-off saw with a diamond blade does it, run wet as well: dry-cut concrete dust carries silica, which is harmful to breathe. Anything structural is a different job. Reinforced concrete, a load-bearing wall or a suspended floor needs a guided cut and a check with an engineer first, because the steel and the concrete around the opening carry load.
