The hire rate is for the machine alone. Delivery is priced on the trip from our base in Cork city or Skibbereen and the access at your end. Each attachment adds to the cost, so decide which ones the job needs before you book: a bucket and a breaker, for example, cover a drain run and breaking out an old path. If the digging turns out bigger than a 3.5 tonne machine should take on, the Hitachi 210LC excavator is available on the same terms. Anyone competent and trained can use a mini digger, and Euro Concrete shows you the controls and the safety checks when the digger is delivered. If nobody on site is confident on a digger, hire it with a driver instead, at extra cost. A construction site can require an operator's training card before you drive.

On your own land, such as a garden, a farm or a house site, the main risks are overturning on a slope or near the edge of a dig, striking a buried cable, pipe or gas main, and people standing within reach of the arm or bucket. Buried services should be traced and marked before any digging, and anyone not operating kept well clear. The handover covers the controls and the safety checks, but it is a familiarisation, not a training course. On a construction site the main contractor's rules apply, and they can ask for a recognised operator card for that class of machine.

Buckets do the digging and loading, and a narrower one suits a trench while a wider one moves more material with each scoop. A hydraulic breaker turns the digger into a machine for breaking concrete, rock or old foundations. An auger bores round holes in the ground for fence posts, signposts and small piles. The ground decides a lot: clay, stone, rock and made ground each suit different tools, so describe what you are digging into, or send a photo of the site. If you are not sure which attachments you need, tell us the job and we will suggest them.

Yes. With a hydraulic breaker fitted, a mini digger breaks up concrete paths, patios, yards and old bases, and Euro Concrete hires a breaker with its Bobcat mini digger. Swap the breaker for a bucket and the same machine loads out the broken pieces, so one hire covers the breaking and the clearing.

Unreinforced concrete breaks readily once an edge is opened up. Reinforced slabs are slower, because the mesh or bar holds the pieces together and has to be cut. Where the concrete meets something that is staying, such as a house wall or a kerb, cut a line with a saw before breaking, so the edge left behind is clean. The breaker shakes the ground, so keep it back from walls, drains and services you want to keep. Inside a building or close to a structure, a remote demolition machine is the safer choice, and Euro Concrete runs that as a separate service.

The smallest digger Euro Concrete hires is the 3.5 tonne Bobcat E35z, which has zero tail swing. Micro diggers under a tonne exist for access through a garden gate or a doorway, but a 3.5 tonne machine digs deeper and lifts more, and still works close to walls and fences.

With zero tail swing, the counterweight never swings out past the tracks, so the digger can slew right beside a wall or fence without striking it. Access is the question to settle before booking: measure the narrowest point on the way in, such as a gate, a gap between houses or a side passage, and check the ground can carry the machine. Send photos of the route in if you are unsure. If the access is too tight for a 3.5 tonne machine, say so when you ring, before the digger is on its way.
