Core drilling and concrete coring in Cork

Operator in hi-vis coring a pipe entry through a precast concrete chamber with a rig-mounted drill.

Round holes cut through reinforced concrete, block and stone for pipes, ducts, vents and cables. We work from bases in Cork city and Skibbereen, across the whole county, on construction sites, farms and private houses.

Have ready: where the job is, what you're drilling through, and how many holes at what size.

What core drilling involves

Euro Concrete Services cores round holes through walls, floors, slabs and precast chambers, on live construction sites, farms and private houses across Cork. The drill is bolted in place on a rig and water-fed, and the diamond bit cuts through the steel reinforcement along with the concrete.

Core drilling is also called coring, core cutting or diamond drilling. The bit cuts without hammering, so very little vibration travels through the structure and the edge of the hole is clean. Holes run straight whether they go through horizontally or vertically.

Working on site

Diamond drilling is wet, so water and slurry are managed as part of the job. Where a hole goes through a load-bearing wall or slab, we survey it first and agree the position with your engineer before anything is drilled.

How Euro Concrete operates

  1. Send us the details

Ring or WhatsApp with where the job is, what you are drilling through, and how many holes at what size. Photos or drawings help.

  2. We price the job

We come back to you with a price and the method we will use.

  3. Survey where it matters

If a hole goes through a load-bearing wall or slab, we survey it first and agree the position with your engineer.

  4. We drill

Rig-mounted drills are bolted in place for a straight hole. Water and slurry are managed as part of the job.

Insurance and training. Euro Concrete carries employer's liability and public liability insurance. Our crew holds SOLAS Safe Pass cards and has Abrasive Wheels training.

Core drilling questions

What is concrete core drilling?

Concrete core drilling cuts a round hole through concrete, block or stone using a hollow, water-cooled bit with diamond segments on its rim. The bit removes a solid cylinder of material, called the core, and leaves a clean-sided hole ready for a pipe, duct, cable or vent to pass through. Euro Concrete cores walls, floors and slabs across Cork.

The drill motor runs on a stand that is bolted or anchored to the wall or floor, which holds the bit square to the surface for the full depth of the cut. Water runs through the bit to cool the diamond segments and carry the slurry out of the hole. The diamonds grind through the material without hammering, so the bit cuts the steel reinforcement as well as the concrete, and very little vibration travels into the rest of the structure. When the bit is through, the core is lifted out and the hole is ready.

What is a core drill in construction?

A core drill in construction is a diamond drill mounted on a rig, which cuts round holes through concrete, block and stone. Euro Concrete uses it for the holes services need: penetrations through walls, floors and slabs for plumbing, drainage, ventilation ducts, electrical cable and fire suppression pipework, plus pipe entries into precast chambers and cores for testing.

Coring is how services get through concrete that is already poured: when a route changes late in a build, when a penetration was missed at the formwork stage, or when new services go into an older building. It avoids breaking out a section of wall or slab to get a pipe through. On farms the same work puts drainage and water pipes through the walls and floors of sheds, tanks and yards. A core cut for testing comes out as a solid cylinder, which a lab can crush to check the strength of the concrete.

Is core drilling precise?

Yes. Euro Concrete bolts the core drill to the wall or floor on a rig, so it cuts a hole to the diameter of the bit, in the position marked out, and straight through the full thickness of the wall or slab. The edge comes out clean and round.

The position of each hole is set before the rig goes up, either from the drawings or marked on site with whoever is running the job. The rig is then bolted down so it cannot move while the bit cuts. That is what makes it the method for holes that have to line up with something on the other side, such as a pipe run through a floor into the service void below, or a duct that has to meet a fan or grille. Send the drawings or photos with the positions marked and we will set out from those.

Will a concrete core drill go through rebar?

Yes. A diamond core bit cuts through steel reinforcing bar as it cuts the concrete around it, so Euro Concrete cores reinforced walls, floors and slabs without stopping at the steel. The bit slows as it meets a bar, and the core lifts out with the cut ends of the bar inside it.

Because the bit cuts whatever sits in its path, the question on a structural job is whether the bar should be cut at all. Main reinforcement in a beam, a column or a suspended slab can be carrying load, so a hole through it is positioned with the engineer, who may move the hole a little to miss a bar or confirm the cut is acceptable. Cover meters and drawings help find the steel before drilling. In a blockwork wall or a non-structural partition the steel is light or absent, and the hole goes where it is needed. Water keeps the diamonds cool as they pass through the steel, which protects the bit.

How much does core drilling cost?

Euro Concrete prices each core drilling job on how many holes you need, their size, what you are drilling through, how thick it is, and how easy the spot is to reach. Ring Sean on 086 881 9848 with those details, or send photos, and we will give you a price for the job.

Reinforced concrete takes longer than block, because the bit has to cut the steel as well. A few other things change the time on site. Several holes on one visit share the setting up. Holes overhead into a ceiling slab need more setting up than holes down through a floor. Work inside a finished building needs the water and slurry contained, which takes longer than coring on an open site. Access matters too: a hole at height or in a tight plant room takes longer to rig than one at floor level.

Is there a core drilling service near me?

Euro Concrete Services provides core drilling anywhere in County Cork, setting out from Skibbereen or Cork city with rig-mounted drills and diamond bits. Ring Sean on 086 881 9848 with the address, what you are drilling through and the hole sizes, and he will reply with a price and a date.

Coverage runs from Cork city and harbour towns such as Cobh and Passage West, through Fermoy and Mitchelstown in North Cork, to Dunmanway, Bantry and Schull in the west. Farms and one-off houses between the towns are covered the same way. On a larger job, a list of holes with their sizes and positions, or a marked-up drawing, lets us plan the visit so every hole is cored in one go. Say what is on the far side of each hole, such as a room in use or a finished ceiling below, so it can be protected before the drill goes through.
