What ventilation coring involves
Euro Concrete Services cores the openings a ventilation system needs through concrete, block and stone walls, floors and slabs, in homes, commercial buildings, farms and industrial units across Cork. We cut the openings, and your installer fits the ventilation.
The work covers new systems and retrofits in finished buildings: extract fans, heat recovery ventilation, ducting, local exhaust ventilation (LEV), fan walls and fume extraction. Round openings are cored with a diamond bit on a bolted rig. Square and rectangular openings are formed by stitch coring, a row of overlapping cores, or cut with a wall saw where the size calls for it.
Working on site
Coring is wet, so water and slurry are managed as part of the job, and in a finished building they are contained as the drill cuts. Where an opening goes through a load-bearing wall or slab, we survey it first and agree the position with your engineer.

Ventilation coring questions
What is ventilation coring?
Ventilation coring is cutting the openings a ventilation system needs through walls, floors and slabs, using a diamond core drill on a bolted rig. Euro Concrete cores round openings for ducts and fans, and forms square openings by stitch coring, ready for the installer to fit the system.
The drill is bolted to the wall or floor and fed with water, and the hollow diamond bit cuts a clean round hole through concrete, block, stone and the steel reinforcement, lifting the core out whole. Stitch coring puts a row of overlapping cores around the outline of a square or rectangular opening, so the centre comes out as one piece. The bit cuts rather than hammers, so very little vibration travels through the building, which matters in a finished home or a working plant room. The position and size come from the installer or the drawings, so the opening lines up with the fan, duct or grille that goes into it.
Do you install the ventilation system?
No. Euro Concrete Services cuts the openings that a ventilation system passes through, and the system itself is designed, supplied and fitted by your ventilation installer. Our part ends when the holes are cored, cleaned out and ready for the ducts, sleeves or fans to go in.
Keeping the two trades separate works well: the installer knows the system and gives the positions and sizes, and we core them through the wall or slab. On a new build the positions can come from the drawings; on a retrofit, the installer can mark them on the wall. Where an opening passes through a load-bearing element, its position is agreed with the engineer before it is cored. Heat recovery units, extract fans, local exhaust ventilation and fume extraction all need openings of this kind, and we cut them for each. If you have not chosen an installer yet, we can still price the coring once the system and its openings are known.
What size core drill for 100mm ducting?
Euro Concrete cores the opening to suit the duct and whatever goes around it, so the final size comes from your installer. A 100mm duct needs a core a little larger than the duct itself, and the installer's fitting instructions set how much larger.
Round ducts and fans come in standard sizes, and core bits are made to match them, so a core can be cut close to the duct size or with extra room around it. That extra room is for whatever surrounds the duct in the wall: a sleeve, a wrap of insulation, a fire collar or a bead of sealant. Where the duct runs through at an angle, or falls towards the outside so water drains away, the hole is cored at that angle and the bit size allows for it. Send the duct size, the installer's drawings or the product details with your enquiry, and we will core to suit.
What are the disadvantages of core drilling?
Core drilling is wet, it needs power and water on site, and the drill rig is bolted to the wall or floor, which leaves small fixing holes. Euro Concrete manages the water and slurry as part of the job, and the fixing holes are small and easily filled.
The slurry from a wet core is the main thing to plan for inside a finished building, since it has to be contained and collected rather than left to run. A core drill cuts round holes only, so a square opening needs stitch coring or a wall saw, which takes longer. A hole through a load-bearing wall or slab needs a survey first, and cutting through reinforcement takes a little strength from the element, so the position is agreed with the engineer. The rig also needs room to stand and a surface to fix to. Diamond coring is quiet compared with breaking out, sends very little vibration through the building and leaves a clean edge.
How much does ventilation coring cost?
Euro Concrete prices ventilation coring per job, on the number of openings, their sizes, the material and thickness of the wall or floor, and where in the building they are. Ring Sean on 086 881 9848, or send the installer's drawings, and we will price every opening together.
A full set of openings for a house or a plant room is quicker per hole than coring them one at a time, because the rig and the protection are set up once. Round cores are the quickest; a square opening built from overlapping cores takes longer than a single round hole of the same width. Reinforced concrete is slower to core than block. Coring overhead into a soffit, or high on a wall, takes longer to rig than drilling near the floor. In an occupied home or office, the work area is protected and the slurry held back as the drill cuts, which adds time compared with an open site.
Where in Cork do you core openings for ventilation?
Euro Concrete Services cores ventilation openings anywhere in County Cork, travelling from Cork city or Skibbereen. Ring Sean on 086 881 9848 with the address, the number and size of the openings and what the walls are built of, and he will arrange a time that fits in with your installer.
The whole county is covered, from Cork city and Glanmire to Carrigtwohill and Midleton in the east, Charleville and Kanturk in the north, and Macroom, Bandon and Bantry in the west. The openings come before the installer's fit-out, so booking the coring ahead of their start date keeps the job moving. For a house retrofit, tell us which rooms the openings are in, whether the walls are block, concrete or stone, and whether a floor or a bedroom sits above the fan position. Send the installer's layout, or photos with the positions marked, and every opening can be priced together.
